Dressed for Japan!

Hi y'all!

Hope everyone had a fantastical weekend! I know I definitely did!

I wanted to share with you guys one of my outfits from the weekend. It was in support of an event, Free Hugs for Japan at Washington Square Park, and so I tried to devise something that spoke to the cause:

The color scheme, of course, derives from the Japanese flag (with exception to the sweater and boots; that's just included because it was cold!). Even though it was a rather chilly day out, I stuck to my red tights and white romper, and happily so! Was a statement made? If my outfit didn't do it, the group sure enough did, and all that matters is that we all came together to help out those suffering in Japan.

Structured Mess

Ello everyone!

I sadly do not have a long mirror in which I can examine my outfit thoroughly as I get dressed and this can definitely be an issue when I'm in my morning rush to get to class on time (or close enough to it). To get past this issue though, my camera becomes my mirror and I decided to share with you this part of my routine.

This is close to my finished look. I go back and forth adding and taking away and altering my outfit till I can get something I'm satisfied with from all angles. Once I can figure out the outfit, my hair choice and makeup is usually quite easy to figure out from there as well as any additional accessories I feel would fit well, for which my actual mirror suits me just fine. After I did the above run through, I finished up and spent my day roaming around campus as follows:

This is another one of my grandma's beautiful pieces that I discovered the other day and this red, silky blouse is just heavenly! I love the design of the fabric and I think that there is some aesthetic appeal to the buttons not being visible. Also there is a clip-like button that is third from the bottom that cinches the waist a bit and allows for the option of closing the last two buttons of the shirt or not without it looking odd. Lastly, I never thought I'd see the day I'd wear a shirt with shoulder pads and dig it, but today was that day and I learned that it can be an awesome when your clothes lend balance to your shape, which was accomplished by pairing this with my favorite skinny jeans.

I took a trip down memory lane when I put on these Timberland boots from years ago and after today, I wonder why I've kept them off my feet for so long?! They are so very comfortable and the really funny thing I found out today is that by wearing them untied as I did, they actually gave my buns and thighs a good work out with all the walking I had to do in the day! I felt so toned once I got home so I'm definitely going to give that a try since my workout program is totally non-existent at the moment.

Since the look as a whole consists of a mix of structured vs. unstructured, I figured the hair ought to mirror that so I had a low messy bun to the left with a cream lace flower pin to the right. Fun and simple enough!

As I was taking these photos, the shoulder pads made me think of the 80's so then I started doing dance from back in the day.

Hey everyone!

Just wanted to put up a post thanking you all for taking the time to read my blog! It really is such a great feeling and an honor to know you come and check it out when you can. Seeing the increasing viewership makes me want to continue to share what I know and love with you all. I seriously can't really express how overjoyed I am with this accomplishment!!

Sadly, I wish I could do something really cool like hold a fun contest or something, but being broke and out of work at the moment, it's really hard to do that. But I hope that for the future that will be possible! For now though, I do want to share in some fun with you all so I came up with the following idea:

Take a picture of your most colorful outfit combination and send it to my email (littleluna.love@gmail.com) by Monday April 11. Then I'll put them all together and have a post showing all our polychromatic awesomeness! Neutral combos will count. Have at least 3 colors in your pallette. Any questions can be left in the comment section, that way if someone else wants to know they can see right there. Each piece must consist of a notable base color (no multi-colored single pieces). Graphic tees/prints are allowed as long as the base is defined.

So what do you guys think?! I think this would be a really really fun idea to do and be a part of. So start crackin' and thinking what you want to do! I look forward to seeing what you all come up with and am even more excited about seeing what they look like all together!

Grandma Clothes

Hi everyone!

Did you know that the closet is a magical place? And I'm not really talking about magical in the sense of the wardrobe in "The Chronicles of Narnia." What I mean is when you stick to just picking out certain things time and time again and neglect searching around for something you have picked up in a while, or even more so, something you didn't even know you had in there! 

Case in point: Yesterday morning I was looking for something to wear to school and was actually looking for a vest that has mysteriously disappeared (perhaps another magical aspect of the closet) and stumbled upon some of my grandma's clothing from when she would live with my family! I immediately fell in love with them and though I didn't have much time, I played a little dress up. In the process, I found something to wear that was quite easy to pair up with some other pieces of mine and voila!

 

 

If you can't really make out what the patches on the shirt are, here's a close up:

Too adorable! What I found really amusing was that pretty much all the little shirt patches resembled current fashion trends (plaid, floral, colorblock, ethnic/tribal) and upon the off-white color of the shirt, I think it can be a really versatile piece.

The shirt fits me a bit long and since the weather isn't really Spring-like just yet, I decided to go with an edgy look by cinching the waist with my fave tough-girl belt, these faux leather leggings and my beloved red stilettos. I still thought something was missing though since I didn't think my hair required any special look so I added the fedora because a fedora is just an awesome hat to have, and mine are either black or white, neither  which complement the outfit too well, but this one that mixes the two subdues each color enough so that it looks well.

Sound off! Do you like this one? Think the shirt looks too granny-like or is it right for the times? Have you borrowed or even taken clothing from older family members because you thought they were great for yourself (they won't miss it anyway)? Do you have anyone whose style you love to look at from long ago in your family?

Hello Spring? I See You're Holding Winter's Hand

Hey there everyone!

Spring is finally here! At least according to the calendar it is, though it seems Winter has rubbed off on it. In the City at least last week's glorious Spring weather has converted back to cold times. On Monday it was almost hard to believe it was the first day of Spring! Regardless, I tried to do my best to stay warm and dry from the inter-season rains but still have a touch of the warmer weather to come.

 

Funny story about some of my clothing: the sweater you see above actually used to belong to my younger brother! With a number of my clothing and accessories, I have picked up from him and my childhood (the perks of being a petite lady). I am also known to shop the little boys section for clothing sometimes. I'm not usually too crazy about the little girls section for me at least; I guess that's just the tomboy in me that will always be there. 

I do this because why limit myself to what is marketed to women when I see something I really like that's for another audience? A true lover of self-expression knows to think outside the box, whether it be in fashion, writing, music, etc. I suppose Spring is doing the same now (Or perhaps it's just global warming--as backwards as that sounds right now)?

Regardless, I tried to downplay the boyish-ness of the sweater by keeping everything else feminine (necklace--which is definitely one of my flea market buys!--cloche, leggings, purse, hairstyle). Also, a little pattern mixing helps as well with the sweater's stripes and my button down's plaid. Lastly, belting is key, as it keeps my silhouette looking feminine instead of big and husky-looking (which is what it looks like without the belt due to the loose fit).

So tell me what you think about this look! Can you tell this is a boy's sweater? Have you considered getting something that wasn't intended to be marketed to you? In what ways do you live outside the box?
