Dictionary for Dolls & Dudes: Panache

Hey everyone!

So it's Wednesday and I thought I would start up a "Word of the Week" feature on here to bring you all some light into the jargon of the fashion and beauty communities. To keep it relative to the purpose as well as fun, I've titled it the "Dictionary for Dolls & Dudes" (because alliteration never becomes cliched at all)!

To start us off, I'll begin with the word that got me thinking about this in the first place:

Panache

(Noun) Pronounced "Pah-nawsh, with the accent on the second syllable"

Definition: Flamboyance in regards to one's style or action.

Example: There was such panache displayed at John Galliano's final Dior collection, it's hard to believe he can truly be replaced.

Origin: The word is of Latin origin (pinnaculum) but the connotation it carries today derives from its French origin (pennache) and literally means the "plume" of a hat or helmet. The word itself became often associated with King Henry IV of France, who was recognized not only by his characteristics as a pleasure-loving, cynical and courageous but also by the white plume that always adorned his helmet and was a part of his battle cry: "Ralliez-vous à mon panache blanc!" Translation: "Follow my white plume!"

Sources:
1. Merriam-Webster Dictionary
2. Wikipedia

The reason I took note of this word was a blog I began following that really intrigued me, titled Panache Offblast, but I had no idea what the term in the title meant! I figured I wasn't the only one, though, because language is always transforming as well as fashion and beauty, so put the two together, and you bet that there are new words getting introduced into those aspects of culture as well. Thus I came up with this idea, which as a lover of language, I thought it would fun feature to share with you all!

Did you know of the word "Panache"? Do you use it in your speech frequently or on occasion? Do you like the word? If you didn't know of it or use it before, will you start to now?

Hope you enjoyed this feature and look forward to being a part of this small-yet-large aspect of fashion and beauty, because how you talk to folks in the industry can make or break who your connections in it.

Also, any words you've heard but aren't sure of? Feel free to post below or shoot me an email at littleluna.love@gmail.com or you can even tweet me (Twitter info is off to the right)!

Don't Let the Black and White Confuse You; I'm a Rainbow Swirl Lollipop!

Hey everyone!!!

It is absolutely wonderful to be back!! If you aren't a follower on Twitter, the reason I went all Houdini on you guys once again was due to the massive overhaul that took place in my room. I'm sharing it with my little brother and now we've managed to paint the room, as well as the rest of the place, white, get new beds (bunk beds to be exact), shifted some furniture around, got rid of A LOT of stuff, set up a mini office in one corner of the room and I've just about got all of my wardrobe and makeup set up. There are still some minor things that need to take place but things have been working out pretty smoothly now. I will say that I'm still trying to find where is the best place in the apartment to take pics so you may see me all over the place in the next couple posts. Anyway, I'm so happy to get back into the swing of things on here as there is a lot I want to chat with you all about and I've taken the time away to prep some new ideas I hope to begin sharing with you all very, very soon as well as some posts I intended to share before but with all that was going on,  I didn't get the chance. So let's get started, shall we?!

Last week on Friday, I did something out of the norm and got up extra-early instead of my usual afternoon time wake-up (though I'm currently trying to shift that routine so I won't be so out of it once school starts--2 weeks left!!). The reason was due to an interview I decided I'd give a try at Dylan's Candy Bar! If you've never heard of this place, I'll fill you in on why you should check it out:

1. Dylan Lauren is Ralph Lauren's (yes, the designer) daughter! Even though her work is invested in something else, she definitely has her dad's eye when it comes to style, both in regards to the store layout, products, and herself!
2. Even if you don't have much of a sweet tooth, like myself, there is undoubtedly something that will call your attention! They have candy from every country that produces it and it's definitely something we all should experience (I sadly didn't get to go into the store that day but I'm thinking of returning soon just for it).
3. Not a candy person at all? Check out their gear! They have colors galore when it comes to their other products, which include cute clothes for everyonecolorful bagsdelicious-looking stationery (NERD ALERT: I go absolutely wild looking at this page), and many more.
4. The New York City Flagship Store has a separate space for parties as well as a very nice café with a menu full of yummy delights.

Isn't that rad or what?! I obviously didn't take any pics (how odd would that look while waiting on a line for an interview) but definitely will share some next time I go. I don't know how the outcome is looking, seeing as it has been about a week, but I always wait 2 weeks before holding off on expectations. What I thought was a fun part of the interview, though, was the question "If you could be any kind of candy, what would you be and why?" I answered, "A Rainbow Swirl Lollipop because each characteristic on its own stands out well but put them together and you get something awesome, like me!" When written it may sound a bit cocky, but I'm pretty confident in that answer and know that it's definitely applicable. Oddly enough, I was dressed like the complete opposite of a Rainbow Swirl Lollipop but more on that in a second.

After I scampered off and had some breakfast, I scurried over to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to finally check out the Savage Beauty exhibit. I got there at about 11:15 a.m. and was met with the following line:

That would be the museum behind me in the last shot and the first two show the line going down the block, away from the museum, and then wrapping back toward it. Also, this was just to get inside the museum itself! Another line awaited to go to the exhibit! I should have known a little better and my feet were already dying in the shoes I was wearing but I soldiered on till about 12 p.m. when a guard came out with a megaphone to declare the exhibit closed for the rest of the day!! Talk about popular! A little disappointed, but tremendously happy to return home and kick off my shoes, I went on my way and plotted to return over the weekend (more on that in a future post). Before I did that, though, I shot some pictures of my outfit to share:

I wanted to go for a classy look that still felt comfortable for the Summer so I initially thought "Blouse & Skirt & Heels" but didn't really feel my options until I took a look at this midi houndstooth skirt, a vintage score from my mother's closet. Where's the skirt you may ask? It's the dress I'm wearing! That's right: I took it all the way up and it fit beautifully. To keep it figure-flattering I cinched the waist with my favorite vintage green belt (not with the intention of matching it to my bra straps lol). Speaking of the bra straps, I didn't want to show those off so I topped it off with a pinstripe blazer to create some minor print-mixing (TIP: You may have heard it dozens of times but the key to easy print-mixing is keeping your color palette the same on both prints). I finished it off with my classiest purse and pair of heels, silver horseshoe earrings (Yes, I'm wearing earrings after a two year break!), and, of course, a pearl necklace--this having been my two-layered ivory and grey one from my last trip to the Flea Market.

For hair, I went with a messier version of the same hairstyle I wore for the last interview outfit I shared to deconstruct the outfit a bit. Lastly, for makeup, I kept it simple with pink lips and lengthy lashes.

How do you like this outfit? Have you ever tried wearing a skirt as a top or dress? Are there any other pieces that you've alternated its original use and why? If you were any type of candy in the world, what would you be and why? Do you think I was right to say Rainbow Swirl Lollipop or did you expect something else? Did you check out the Alexander McQueen exhibit over the summer? Most importantly, how have you been in all my time away?! What have you been up to in that time?!

For anyone who isn't really confident about switching up a skirt into a dress, I'd like to share another example that does it really well! As I've mentioned a few times, I'm a petite-yet-curvy little doll so you may think "That's why you can get away with it!" Let the lovely Tanesha Awasthi a.k.a. Girl with Curves show you how much of a misconception that is, as she is a woman that is on the Curvy-Girl spectrum (some may refer to it as Plus-Sized or Full-Figured as well, but I love Tanesha's take on it best).

So take those skirts out for a spin one of these tremendously warm days as something other than a skirt! Maybe you'll find out you have a new favorite dress/top (definitely found my go-to dress for a more formal occasion)!

Hasta Luego!

Little Luna

LIGHT LIT: Forgotten Fashion

Hey everyone!

In continuation with my last portion of the haul being based on literature, I figured I'd share this fantastic book that I had recently returned to the library titled Forgotten Fashion: An Illustrated Faux History of Outrageous Trends and Their Untimely Demise by Kate Hahn. It also features the following illustrators: Dena Blankmeyer, Teri Chung, Elizabeth Dran, Andraé Gonzalo, Amelia Haviland, Annie Lim, Lily Ng, Alison Petrie, Isabella Scotto. What?! Pictures in a grown person's book?! Damn straight people, because what would a book on fashion, especially "forgotten" fashion, be like without art to accompany it? Anyway, let's get into the synopsis:

A Never-Before-Told History of Doomed-to-fail faux fashion. If you stockpile back issues of Vogue, plan your schedule around Project Runway--and have a well-dressed funny bone--you'll love this collection!

Mixing fictional designers, made-up muses, and totally imaginary trendsetters with real people and places Forgotten Fashion traces the brith, life and death of faux trends with intelligent humor.

These are the stories behind such formerly unsung sartorial concoctions as a Jazz Age flapper dress made entirely of ice; a mid-century French evening gown inspried by a refrigerator; a pair of Depression Era satin pajamas popularized by Hollywoood with the help of an African elephant named Jins; an Eighties suit made with gilded pinstripes; and the littlest little black dress, ever; along with many other creations that will surpries, shock, and delight you.

From the Body Muff (1905) to the Fidelity Cardigan (1943) to Emotionally Distressed Jeans (1998), each faux fashion is sewn with wit and brought to life in fabulous full-color illustrations.

Sadly, each of the faux trends in this volume met an untimely if not tragic demis. They were the victimes of a veriety of misfortunes includeing bad weather, long wars, short tempers, wild animals, poorly formulate fabric blends, and even their creators , who include several Paris-trained couturiers a Milanese tailor, a bourgeois Swiss teenager, and a man known only as "Hugo."

So open this book and peruse. Much like shopping along a crooked street of stores, you'll discover a collections of surprises.

My Thoughts: Hysterical! Amusing! Fascinating!

Now for a more in depth analysis: The book consists of short stories broken down in a chronological way. The actual stories are well-written with a great amount of wit put into the stories and tying the actual historical events of the time periods to the clothing. It makes a great show of how fashion isn't just some clothes draped upon individuals but a reflection of the issues taking place in society like other forms of art. At the same time, it takes the role of a satirical work that pokes fun of actual fashion choices made in the day and brings the reader to think what it would have been like if these stories were real instead of faux history. To top it off, the works of the illustrators are fantastic and add an enlightening vision to the fashion choices described in the stories. Though we are accustomed to using such imagery to think of it for ourselves, I liked the fact that actual fashion illustrators participated added to the story and gave it further life. I liked them so much, I was slightly wishing there was truth to the stories and that some of these could be found somewhere in the world! Ultimately, what really struck me were the issues faced that led to the downfall of each trend, as they were, again, reminiscent of issues faced by many in these time periods and left me pondering further about this alternate universe in fashion and the effect it could have had on us all (blame the philosopher in me to make it serious). A fun work altogether and a delightful read, I think I'll be adding this to my book collection, and find that there will be a source of amusement/inspiration for all fashionistas who pick it up. Also if you want to check out more regarding the book and even see a video in which Andraé Gonzalo of Project Runway fame shows the process he went through to create some of the art he put into the book, check out the Forgotten Fashion website.

Normally I provide my fave quotes but I decided to instead tease you guys with some of my fave illustrations without giving too much away:

Picasso Patchwork (1916) Chung

Ponchettes (1970) Chung
Hospitalia (1987) Dran
Rating: 5/5

Before ending this post, I'd like to make mention of the following:
The above illustrations are the works of a lovely blogger/artist/stylist named Donna Sy, or as she has come to be known, This Lady Behaves. Originally, her blogging focus was on finding women who fit the bill for the This Lady Behaves Woman, which she described in an interview with The Compassion Fashion Project as "a sarcastic brand. I don't quite know what to call it.  It is a girl with confidence and style and not scared to show it.  She has the mindset that vintage beauty never gets boring.  She has will and motivation. That's what "behaves" means to me really.  Not someone who sits in one corner and just keeps quiet!  Nope!  Someone loud and ready to party! Who it is? Me in the past...my daughter in the future. :)"

After featuring some of her own art on the blog, though, she received lots of requests for more and thus started Knickerless Doodles, a blog dedicated to her fabo fashion illustrations! Though it has carried a short lifespan, she has already collaborated with The Compassion Fashion Project to support domestic violence survivors and drawn other bloggers! She, too, gets a 5/5 rating from me and a high recommendation to my readers to check her out, both her illustrations as well as her mission to find 100 This Lady Behaves women on This Lady Behaves.

Happy Reading/Admiring! Hasta Luego!

Lazy Little Luna Haul: Summer Lit Picks

Hey everyone!

Even though I had one more day planned for Haul Week, with the crazy renovations going on in my room, that one is going to have to be postponed for another day, so we'll end it on today with LITERATURE!!! Yeah, it's time to get your nerd on folks because these aren't mother's chick lit novels. These are REAL novels (with a hint of Scripture)!! So what do I have planned for this Summer? Check it out!

*NOTE: With exception for the last two books, the other links are other versions of the books. Online the nook versions of all the Barnes & Noble Classics Series are available but not all are available in their paperback form.

While on line about to make the purchase, I saw the following hanging and felt compelled to get it A. I love reusable/recyclable bags for shopping and B. I love a bag where I can show off my lit-chic self.
To Kill a Mockingbird Book Cover Recyclable Shopping Tote (Available In-Store Only--Also available in 3 other classic book covers)

The first book was my initial purpose for stepping into Barnes & Noble as my aunt, as well as a friend, had been wanting me to read the book for quite some time. As I was perusing their other selections, I stumbled upon the Barnes & Noble Classics Series table, which had a sign stating that if 2 books were bought, the third came free. The prices of the books in the collection were pretty awesome on top of that so I simply couldn't resist and picked up all that you see! The last free book went to my aunt, who picked up her own copy of Siddhartha that was a part of the Series but I picked my version as it carried the additional Scripture by The Buddha. I picked out these books because I like to take the free time in the summer to get better acquainted with those who are deemed the Classics in literature and learn from them as an aspiring writer. I don't know that I'll like them all, but no harm in getting to know them!

What's on your Summer Reading list (This is only a small bit of mine--I have many more from the library as well as my own unread selection)? What's your preferred genre for beach reads? Are any of the above favored authors for you? Do you take time during the Summer to read at all (It's a good way to kill time with all the travelling accomplished during the season)? What are you reading right now? Any recommendations for the Summer? TALK NERDY TO ME! lol

Hope you enjoyed Haul Week everyone! Hasta Luego!

Love,
Little Luna

P.S. I meant no offense to Chick Lit readers, but I've grown tired of the formulaic drama and romance. :P

Lazy Little Luna Haul: Building Up My Beauty

Hey everyone!

*NOTE: Before you get started reading this post, a little info on why this is being posted today and not last week: Blogger had some issues while I was writing this up, which I noticed when it said that it was encountering problems saving it and my Internet connection was still okay (that's usually the only reason I ever have that problem). Turned out that for quite a few users, the site had gone down, me included. By the time it came up and I knew, it was already headed into the following day (Thursday) and I saw that most of what I had written was gone. I have this issue that when I write something up and something happens that causes most, if not all, of that work to be erased, I become too frustrated to work right away. Thus, I stepped away for a while and began the following day (Friday) but, if you follow me on Twitter (I've been a good girl and have been using it--link on the side to it), you know that I've been extending that break due to the Dance.Here.Now. Festival throughout the weekend. But wait, the weekend was over a while ago!? Yes, it has, and I then started working on renovations for my room (a grueling task that I'll be dealing with for at least the rest of July) but I've finally sat myself down to take the time and keep this going. So I hope you all don't mind playing pretend with me and imagining that we're still on track to finish up Haul Week! Care to join me?! READ ON!! :)

It's Day 3 of Haul Week! Hope you've been enjoying it thus far! Today the focus will be on a few beauty products I've picked up. There isn't much as I've mentioned a few times before, beauty and makeup have to be my Achilles heel when it comes to putting my look together. This is partly due to the many years as a tomboy paired with the fact that I have anything but a steady hand, which makes applying eye makeup as well as nail polish quite the challenge. Regardless, I do try and continue to hope practice makes perfect or at least allows me to improve well enough to not have to repeat the same step five or ten times before getting it right. Moving on from my idiosyncrasies, I haven't really loaded up when it comes to makeup for the Summer because I want to keep it easy A. because of my issues (so much for moving on!) and B. because it's best to go light with your makeup in the Summertime, right? I'm sure I'll be adding more to this collection, but here's what I have going on for now:

EYES:

These lengthy lashes were brought to you by:

Rimmel London Glam'Eyes Day 2 Night Mascara--Color(s): Black--Bought at $7.99 in Kmart--Available in Drugstores, Beauty Supply Stores and Various Online Retailers

Volumizing Brush

Lengthening Brush (Used for lashes as seen above)

FACE:

Zoe & Zac Naturals Pink Moon Mineral Powder--Color(s): Appears in Pink, Lavender, Plum, and Coral/Applies in Deep Pink--Bought at $3.00 in Payless (Clearance!)--Limited Availability In Store/Available Online for $7.99 (Check your local Payless to see if they have it!!)

LIPS:

CoverGirl Lip Perfection Lip Color in Rapture**--Color(s): Coral--Bought at $7.49 at Kmart--Available in Drugstores, Beauty Supply Stores and Various Online Retailers

NAILS:
Sally Hansen Ultimate Shield Base & Top Coat--Color(s): Clear--Bought at $7.99 in Duane Reade--Available in Drugstores, Beauty Supply Stores and Various Online Retailers

BODY:
Zoe & Zac Naturals Apples & Pears Hand Sanitizer--Color(s): Green--Bought at $2.99 at Payless--Available In Store and Online for $2.99

So far I've added these to my makeup collection. I sadly lost my Falsies mascara by Maybelline, which, though it was my first mascara ever, I was in love with it. I really like Rimmel London, though, and originally intended to get their Lash Accelerator Mascara but I saw this one and loved the fact that it has the options of volume or length or both! I'll tell you guys my complete thoughts on the mascara in a separate post though. I was worried the mineral powder would be a little too much for my skin tone but I find that it suits it really well and is super pretty! Besides, how could I resist a product called "Pink Moon?" I have wanted to try the Lip Perfection Lip Color the moment I heard how moisturizing they were, and so happy I did! I loved this shade and the lasting power is pretty great and moisturize it does. 'Tis a snazzy little product I plan on multiplying my possibilities with. The Ultimate Shield was more of a necessity as my previous top/base coat ran out and I prefer two-in-one products a lot when they are good at what they do, even if this does a decent job. Lastly, the Hand Sanitizer was also a bit of a necessity as I like to be able to have it on hand in case there is no soap in a public bathroom or a lot of time outdoors starts to make my paws feel a little icky. The fact that it has the beautiful scent of apples and pears drives me wild though!

Let's talk Beauty for once y'all, and this is very applicable to guys and gals in this day and age! Any haul items you really liked from today? Have you added anything to your beauty collection that is so perfect for Summer, or better yet, simply perfect for any and all times of the year? How much do you focus on your beauty routine daily? What level do you find yourself falling into and why: Beauty>Fashion, Fashion>Beauty, or Fashion=Beauty? Anything you think I ought to try (recommendations are DEFINITELY a good thing here)?

Hasta Luego! Also, thank you for your patience and stay tuned as we continue with Haul Week! It's almost coming to a close! :)

Love,
Little Luna

**P.S. I sadly lost my Rapture Lippy while at the Dance.Here.Now. Festival to the sand. BUT, as I said, I really loved the product so I plan on getting it once again soon and perhaps have it come home with a friend! Hopefully, you'll see me rocking it once again very soon.

Also, if you still are confused as to what the Dance.Here.Now. Festival is all about, here's some video for you to enjoy (You may want to put the volume way low as there will be massive amounts of bass booming the moment you click--also LOTS of light flashing will be in the videos). I'll be elaborating more on it in a future post:

Lazy Little Luna Haul: Simple Additions for an Awesome Summer

Hey everyone!

It's Day 2 of Haul Week! Today I'll be showing some purchases from Target and Marshalls that have already begun to play a big role in my Summer style, and I don't doubt that they'll continue to do so.

MARSHALLS:

White Mountain 'Seaside' Women's Boat Shoe--Color(s): Tan/Beige--Bought at $34.99--Now $29.99 on White Mountain's website (SALE!!)

iWave LX100 Stereo Earbuds--Color(s): Silver/Grey--Bought at $7.99--Available on Lockerz for $12.99
**NOTE: This is a part of iWave's Crystallized Collection, meaning that there are other colors and crystal designs available, if plain silver is not your cup o' tea. Also, the pink thing you see attached is the bobino Cord Wrap, which was gifted to my father by The Container Store but as he had one, he gave it to me. It's available in Small, Medium and Large at $2.99, $3.99, and $4.99, respectively.

With exception to the jacket and sweater, which I picked up A. they were on clearance and B. they are great once Autumn begins to settle in (NOTE: it's important to think ahead when you come across such things), all these items are so fit for Summer and exactly what I've been looking for!

With the Target purchases: The hat gives me a break from my usual fedora-and-cap rotations and its straw-like make screams Summertime. The backpack was something I fell for immediately when I locked eyes with it and is beyond perfection for my life: Useful for Summer trips to the Beach or Park or anywhere you can think of; Can carry numerous books for a bibliophile like myself (currently carrying Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld and Dune by Frank Herbert); The previous point gives it the perk of being perfect for school as well as its total of NINE pockets (that's including the open pockets on the inside for small things you need readily accessible); Its laidback vintage look makes it easy to transition with many things in my wardrobe. Am I convincing you yet? If not, that's ok. I don't necessarily want to make you go out and get it, but merely pointing out what a great choice it would be to have if you find yourself needing to carry a load every once in a while. The "Breathe" tee was something my mom found and I thought it had a cute design and would be perfect for any occasions I need to work out (something my lazy self has been postponing) as well as something cute to wear when just relaxing at home.

With the Marshalls purchases: Boat shoes have blown up with the heavy focus on the nautical trend this season. I first saw these in YouTuber and fashion blogger Dulce Candy's Haul and thought that they looked comfortable as well as versatile, though I didn't think I was going to get them. Lo and behold, as I continued my search for the perfect wedges in Marshalls (a continuous failure due to my list of requirements), I came across these shoes as well as a platinum version but decided to go with the tan ones. I've been wearing these puppies constantly and for someone who struggles wearing flat shoes, these are so ideal for my feet! I especially like to pair it up with the backpack, hat, and skinny cargos I showed yesterday, though not all at once, less I want to look like a lost safari travel guide who should be in Australia instead of New York City. As for the headphones, I'm also a musicophile that has the miserable luck of destroying or losing headphones at a ridiculous rate. I intended on including these to the gifts for my dad on Father's Day but crystallized anything isn't really his style and though it claimed to be for men (the length kind of abides by that) I got them for myself and finally got to use my cute little bobino to add an extra touch to fantastic set of earbuds, which work fantastically might I say! Besides, what's Summer without excellent tunes to dance to?!

What do you think of today's haul items? What are some of your summer essentials? Are you hunting for anything you feel should be included like I am for these wedges? What constitutes an awesome Summer for you? What do you have planned to make this Summer awesome? If it's Winter where you are now, how did you make last Summer a really fun one?

Hasta Luego!

Love,
Little Luna
